“This situation is unprecedented and creates confusion,” an insider stated. “Retired officers still report to the office, while newly promoted officers are unable to assume their roles.”

Critics argue that such actions undermine meritocracy, block career progression for younger officers, and perpetuate corruption within the service.

Personnel within the NCS have urged President Bola Tinubu to reject the extension requests, citing legal, administrative, and ethical implications. “Extending their tenure contradicts the principles of fairness and disrupts the organization’s growth,” a source emphasized.

He maintained that investigations could continue without keeping the former governor in custody, stressing that prolonged detention amounts to injustice.

According to him, authorities could impose other restrictions such as withholding El-Rufai’s passport or limiting his movement instead of detaining him.

“You cannot keep a man in perpetuity in detention because you are doing investigation. That is injustice,” he said.

It is reported that El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since his return from Egypt.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, explained that Edun formally resigned on health grounds before the announcement of his successor on Tuesday.

According to Onanuga, Edun, who turned 70 on Monday and has recently faced health challenges, submitted his resignation on his birthday, expressing gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve.

In his letter, Edun stated, “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Under your leadership, Nigeria has grown stronger, more resilient, and gained greater international respect.

“I wish you and the administration continued success going forward.”

Onanuga further disclosed that prior to the official announcement of his exit by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Edun paid a farewell visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

He added that the former minister held a private meeting with the President lasting about an hour before departing to focus on his personal business interests.

Similarly, Dangiwa also resigned from his position, expressing appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council.

An architect by profession, Dangiwa previously served as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank from 2015 to 2022 and as Secretary to the Katsina State Government before his appointment as housing minister in August 2023.

The statement highlighted Edun’s extensive professional background, noting that he served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance between 1999 and 2004 during Tinubu’s tenure as governor.

Before that, he worked at Chase Merchant Bank in Lagos from 1980 to 1986 and later joined the World Bank through its Young Professionals programme, where he handled economic and financial projects across Latin America and the Caribbean.

In 1989, he co-founded Investment Banking & Trust Company Limited (now Stanbic IBTC) and served as Executive Director. He also established Denham Management Limited in 1994, which later evolved into the Chapelhill Denham Group, where he served as chairman from 2008 to 2021.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to both Edun and Dangiwa for their service and contributions to the administration’s economic reform efforts, wishing them success in their future pursuits.

Meanwhile, the President has tasked the newly appointed Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, with sustaining ongoing reforms and driving the administration’s fiscal and economic agenda with renewed focus, discipline, and innovation.

Onanuga also revealed that a new nominee for the housing ministry, Muttaqha Rabe Darma from Katsina State, will soon be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
