Adamawa Expands Traditional Leadership With 83 New Districts

The push for the new districts was driven by community demands, with widespread support from citizens across the 21 local government areas of Adamawa.

During the signing ceremony held at the Government House in Yola on Thursday, Governor Fintiri expressed optimism that the establishment of additional districts would help curb criminal activities. He also announced that the salaries for district heads and their staff would now be covered by their respective local government councils, though these salaries would be periodically reviewed to account for changing circumstances.

Earlier in the week, the Adamawa State House of Assembly passed the bill, which repeals and re-enacts the Adamawa State Districts Creation Law, 2024. The bill had been adopted following the report from the House Standing Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The new arrangement sees Mayo-Belwa, Madagali, Demsa, and Hong LGAs receiving the most districts, with seven each. Other areas such as Fufore and Jada have five new districts, while Michika, Gombi, Yola South, Maiha, Mubi North, Mubi South, and Song LGAs have four each. Shelleng, Girei, Ganye, Numan, and Lamurde will each have three, and Toungo will have two.

According to a viral video circulating online, the former Ogun State governor confirmed the development while addressing his supporters from a branded campaign bus associated with the OGD/PBAT Movement.

In the video, Daniel alleged that the meeting’s outcome would not stand, insisting that he and his group had been barred from entering the venue despite being part of the party structure in the region.

He stated that although they were present for the APC Ogun East caucus meeting, they were denied access, describing any resolutions taken at the gathering as invalid.

The invitation for the emergency stakeholders’ meeting, issued by party leaders in Ijebu Ode, reportedly included deputy governors, serving and former local government chairmen, councillors, and past and present lawmakers at both state and federal levels.

In a related development, Daniel recently referred to his successor, Ibikunle Amosun, as an “enfant terrible successor” during a church service marking his 70th birthday in Sagamu, where Amosun was also in attendance.
