According to Olatunbosun, the trouble began when he and his assistant stopped at a fuel station. While updating a customer about their location, the assistant recorded a video of their surroundings. This prompted officers to accuse them of gathering footage for journalists investigating smuggling.

The transporters were taken to a nearby location where they encountered Officer Adamu Zakari, a soldier who allegedly threatened their lives despite recognizing Olatunbosun. The officers began beating them, demanding to know which journalists they intended to send the footage to.

Abdelmalik, who was also assaulted, said that officers, along with suspected smugglers, interrogated them forcefully. They were dragged to a secluded area and tortured for information. The situation only ended when concerned residents called the police, preventing further harm.

This attack follows previous reports from journalist Fisayo Soyombo that exposed alleged involvement between Customs officers and smugglers along the Lagos-Badagry corridor. Abdullahi Hossein, the Public Relations Officer for Seme Border Customs, stated that the officers responsible for the assault would be removed from their posts and that their actions did not represent the organization’s values.
