NULGE President Explains Delays In Implementing Local Government Financial Autonomy

Published

on

Obiora Orji, spokesman for the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, has expressed concern over the delay in initiating promised direct payments to local governments. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court ruled that local government allocations should be paid directly into their accounts.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Despite this ruling, four months have passed, and the allocations are still being transferred to the joint state-local government accounts managed by the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee.

The Federal Government acknowledged the need for operational adjustments before implementing the ruling and initially set a three-month period for these changes. However, that period ended in October, and no action has yet been taken.

Orji confirmed in an interview with Punch that the promised direct payments have not yet begun, stating, “It is what everybody is waiting for. It cannot be hidden, and once the payment is made, everyone will be aware.”

Akeem Ambali, the National President of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), explained that the delay is due to the lack of approval from President Bola Tinubu for the full implementation of local government financial autonomy. Ambali noted that NULGE had submitted a position paper to an inter-ministerial committee set up to facilitate the Supreme Court’s ruling. The committee, chaired by Senator George Akume, has completed its meetings and submitted a technical report to the president for approval. Ambali emphasized that they are eagerly awaiting the start of implementation.

The match was officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, whose appointment and decisions during the tie have since drawn scrutiny within the Spanish club.

Tensions between Real Madrid and UEFA have remained high since the Super League controversy, and while relations were thought to have improved earlier this year, the latest defeat has reignited old suspicions.

Vinčić, who has handled several major European fixtures in recent seasons, including Champions League and Europa League finals, is now at the centre of renewed debate over officiating standards.
