Vandals Strike Again: Disrupt Transmission Line Repairs In Southern Nigeria

According to TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the Ahoada-Yenagoa line, which was under repair following earlier vandalism, was targeted again on November 19, 2024. The attack damaged towers 29 to 31 and resulted in the theft of roughly one-third of the line’s conductor.
Preliminary investigations show that the attack occurred overnight. In response, local security has been stationed at Ula Ikata in Ahoada East Local Government Area to safeguard the site until repairs are completed. Additionally, efforts are underway to replace the stolen 250mm conductor, with about 85% of the repairs completed despite challenges such as difficult terrain and flooding.
Earlier in November, vandals also struck transmission towers in the Okada and Ofosu communities along the 330kV Benin-Egbin and Benin-Omotosho lines, affecting 31 towers. Significant damage was discovered, and repairs are ongoing to prevent further collapse and avoid disruptions to power supply.
These recurring incidents highlight the growing threat of vandalism and theft that continues to undermine Nigeria’s power infrastructure. TCN urges the public to support efforts to address these crimes and ensure the security of power installations, while security agencies and local communities are called upon to be more vigilant.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday, Yilwatda clarified that the ruling party is currently not engaged in political warfare with its rivals. Instead, he noted that the real battle is raging between the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Over the past three weeks, the APC hasn’t been fighting the ADC or NDC. It’s been NDC against ADC,” Yilwatda remarked. “Honestly, I’ve been watching the insults traded between both parties with absolute amusement. I watch the videos and just laugh. The self-implosion is happening within the opposition, not the APC.”
When questioned on whether he was secretly orchestrating the chaos to weaken his rivals, the APC chairman denied direct involvement but openly admitted that neutralizing the opposition is part of his mandate.
“I am not doing it, but I’d be glad if I could—that is my job,” he stated. “As the ruling party, my role is to stop the opposition, not to make them happy.”
Yilwatda further argued that the APC remains the most stable political entity in Nigeria due to its robust internal conflict resolution committees and its advanced, data-driven membership registration. He revealed that the APC is the only party that links its membership database directly with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), ensuring a transparent and credible structure.

The request, communicated in a letter from the President and disclosed by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday, aligns with Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.
Oluyede was appointed Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, following the health challenges of the late Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5.
Expressing confidence in Oluyede’s capabilities, Tinubu stated:
“President Tinubu is confident about the leadership qualities, professional integrity, and experience of Lt. General Oluyede to lead and inspire the army to ensure national security and stability.”
Before his appointment, Oluyede, a member of the 39th Regular Course, served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army in Jaji, Kaduna.
Commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992 (effective from 1987), Oluyede became a Major-General in September 2020 and has held several command positions throughout his career.
