Okupe: 2023 Election Was Rigged, But No Mandate Was Stolen
Doyin Okupe, the former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign, has rejected the opposition’s claim of a stolen mandate in the 2023 election. In a statement released on Thursday in Lagos, Okupe questioned the legitimacy of the claims, pointing out that Peter Obi, the LP’s presidential candidate, was able to win in President Bola Tinubu’s home base if the election was truly rigged. He also noted that the APC lost in the home areas of both former President Muhammadu Buhari and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
He emphasized that accusations of rigging are not credible, stating, “The reality is that under the best circumstances, the results may not have been perfect, but they reflected the general ratio.”
Okupe also remarked on the unrealistic claims by opposition parties like PDP and LP that the presidency had been stolen, asserting, “No presidency was stolen. Rigging may have occurred, but there has never been a Nigerian election since 1960 that wasn’t rigged to some extent.”
Furthermore, Okupe praised President Tinubu’s reforms, expressing confidence that the president’s policies would begin to show results by the second year of his administration. He also commended Tinubu as a technocrat and reformer, likening him to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, calling it “nonsense” to suggest that the president entered office without a clear plan for governance.
