NIWA Chief Blames Human Error And Drug Use For Persistent Boat Accidents
The Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji, has attributed the recurring boat accidents in Nigeria to human errors, drug abuse, and non-compliance with safety regulations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During an oversight visit by the House of Representatives Committee on NIWA to the agency’s Lokoja headquarters, Oyebamiji revealed that nearly all incidents on the waterways over the past three years resulted from avoidable mistakes by operators.
“Research shows that 99 percent of mishaps on our waterways stem from human errors. Some operators misuse drugs, compromising their judgment, while others overload their boats far beyond capacity,” he said.
He also criticized operators for neglecting essential safety practices, such as providing life jackets, and called for stricter penalties, noting that the current fine of ₦30,000 is inadequate.
Chairman of the House Committee on NIWA, Ojema Ojotu, who led a seven-member delegation, stressed the economic and strategic importance of Nigeria’s inland waterways. He outlined the challenges of frequent boat accidents, flooding, and the need for modern infrastructure, such as dredged waterways and inland ports, to enhance transportation and trade.
Ojotu advocated for investments in human capacity development, operational equipment, and alternative funding models to address these issues.
“This committee will continue to push for policies and funding that support NIWA’s mandate and promote sustainable development,” he concluded.
