FG Tasks Governors To Eliminate Open Defecation Nationwide In Five Years

Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasized the critical importance of this initiative, stating that ending open defecation would significantly enhance public health, boost productivity, and uphold the dignity and safety of Nigerians.
Speaking at the 5th anniversary of the Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet campaign in Abuja, Shettima, represented by Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, called for robust political support at the state and local government levels to drive the campaign forward.
Shettima highlighted the economic opportunities within the sanitation sector, such as job creation, alternative energy production, and biological fertilizer development, aligning these benefits with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.
“The new Strategic Plan for the Clean Nigeria Campaign offers a comprehensive and actionable framework to ensure universal access to proper sanitation by 2030,” he said. He urged governors to prioritize this initiative to achieve an Open Defecation Free Nigeria within the targeted five-year period.
Shettima also warned of the severe public health risks posed by open defecation, including compromised water sources, the spread of diseases, and harm to education and economic productivity, particularly among women and vulnerable communities.
