Panic in Ondo’s Ofosun Village After Gunshots, PDP Alleges APC Involvement

A local source, who identified himself only as Dauda, told Punch that the gunshots had been heard throughout the village since early morning. “We don’t know who they are, but they were firing shots into the air in various parts of the village. Ofosun is an Ondo village near Benin in Edo State. No casualties have been reported, but people are staying indoors,” Dauda said.
The motive behind the gunfire remains unclear. However, Festus Akingbaso, the Deputy Governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed concern about the alleged presence of thugs in several villages under Idanre Local Government Area. He spoke after casting his vote at the Imikan Ward 02, Unit 008 in Idanre.
Akingbaso commended the voter turnout but claimed that many villages, including Ofosun, Omifunfun, and Allah, were being “occupied” by suspected thugs allegedly brought in by the All Progressives Congress (APC). He also mentioned that in Ofosun, suspected thugs had broken into the house of a party member to prevent him from voting, further alleging that there were plans to prevent residents from voting.
“I’ve reported this to the DPO and DSS, but security agencies have yet to act,” Akingbaso said.
In response, the APC’s spokesperson, Steve Otaloro, denied the allegations, asserting that his party was not involved in any criminal activity. He called for a thorough investigation into the claims and dismissed Akingbaso’s accusations as baseless.
“We are committed to peace, and we’ve instructed our members to allow the election to proceed peacefully. The allegations made by the PDP are simply an attempt to create a false narrative,” Otaloro stated. He further questioned Akingbaso’s claims, suggesting that the PDP might be fabricating the accusations due to failed plans.
Otaloro emphasized that, according to reports from the APC, voting had been proceeding smoothly without any major incidents, and he urged for peace to prevail throughout the remainder of the election.
