Nurse Held by ISWAP For Six Years Escapes and Finds Safety In Geidam
Alice Loksha, a nurse who was abducted by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants six years ago, has regained her freedom after escaping her captors, bringing an emotional end to her prolonged ordeal. Speaking to the press at Maimalari Cantonment in Maiduguri, Deputy Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Hadin Kai, Kenneth Chigbu, confirmed that Loksha was found in Geidam, Yobe State, on October 24.
Chigbu revealed that during her captivity, the 42-year-old nurse endured horrific conditions, including forced marriages to two ISWAP commanders. Loksha’s abduction was part of an attack on a UNICEF facility in 2018, during which two other female health workers were also taken. The fate of these two women remains unknown.
Chigbu detailed Loksha’s harrowing journey: after being initially held in Tumbuma for two days, she was moved to Kwalleram, where she spent seven months. During this time, she was married off to an ISWAP leader, Abu Umar, with whom she had a son, Muhammad. Abu Umar was killed in 2022 during a gunfight with military troops. Loksha was subsequently forced into a second marriage with another commander, Abu Simak, before he too was expelled by his fellow militants.
It was from Dogon Chukwu camp, where she had been relocated, that Loksha managed to escape. She crossed into Geidam on October 24, 2024, and reported to the Joint Task Force on October 29. Loksha has since received medical evaluation and humanitarian support.
In another development, Chigbu also confirmed the escape of Fayina Ali, the younger sister of the late Samuel Andrew, an army officer who had been abducted by ISWAP militants in 2022. Ali was held captive for two years before her escape, and she has also been given support by the military.
Both women were received by Zuwaira Gambo, the Borno State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, who assured that they would receive the necessary care, psychosocial support, and rehabilitation before being reintegrated into their families.
Nigeria’s Minister of Regional Development, Engr. She concluded her farewell message with deep appreciation, stating that she steps away from international duty carrying 86 total appearances, zero regrets, and boundless gratitude for her teammates, fans, and the nation.
Joining the global wave of recognition, CAF honored her monumental impact on African women’s football via social media, writing:
“Five WAFCON titles. One immortal legacy. Thank you Ohale for every battle, every trophy and every memory.”
