Ejimakor Appeals To Tinubu To Uphold UN Decision, Free Nnamdi Kanu Now

Ejimakor reminded Tinubu of the July 2022 ruling by the UN Human Rights Council Working Group, which directed Buhari’s administration to release Kanu and provide compensation for his forced rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Ejimakor emphasized that Kanu’s case has now shifted from a purely legal matter to a political one, making it imperative for Tinubu to take action and release Kanu.
Ejimakor outlined the following points in his statement:
“In July 2022, the UN Human Rights Council, through its Working Group, issued a landmark opinion demanding that the Nigerian government, under Buhari’s leadership, release Nnamdi Kanu immediately and provide compensation for his unlawful extradition. The 17-page opinion stated clearly that Nigeria must comply with international law by releasing Kanu and ensuring he receives reparations.”
He continued, “The UN’s Working Group is a quasi-judicial body authorized to adjudicate human rights complaints against UN member states, including Nigeria. Its decisions are legally binding on all member states, and as a signatory to international human rights agreements, Nigeria is obligated to comply with such rulings.”
Ejimakor further pointed out that Nigeria’s failure to implement the UN’s decision, even after receiving it in July 2022, was a significant oversight by the Buhari administration. Despite this, he argued that it is not too late for Tinubu to act on the ruling.
“Unlike his predecessor, President Tinubu has an opportunity to do what is right by releasing Kanu without delay. This matter is no longer just a legal issue; it is a political one, and the responsibility now rests with the President. No further court order is needed to comply with the UN’s binding decision,” Ejimakor said.
