Abuja’s Beggars Targeted: Wike Says Poverty Can’t Justify Security Risks

In October, Wike launched a “war on beggars,” warning that the city must not become a haven for them, a move that has faced criticism from those who argue it overlooks the widespread poverty affecting many Nigerians. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) even threatened legal action if the plan went forward.
During a press briefing on Wednesday, Wike responded to these criticisms, emphasizing that the crackdown was essential for addressing security risks in the capital. He pointed out that some beggars may be gathering intelligence for criminal groups.
Wike also rejected poverty as a valid excuse for security threats, asserting that no nation has fully solved poverty, and the focus should be on safeguarding citizens from potential harm. He explained, “There is nowhere in the world where employment has been provided for everybody. Poverty alone should not justify security risks.”
He further warned that individuals pretending to be beggars could be observing the movements of residents, acting as informants for criminal activities.
Nigeria’s Minister of Regional Development, Engr. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time.”
She concluded her farewell message with deep appreciation, stating that she steps away from international duty carrying 86 total appearances, zero regrets, and boundless gratitude for her teammates, fans, and the nation.
Joining the global wave of recognition, CAF honored her monumental impact on African women’s football via social media, writing:
