December 1 Strike: Workers Brace For Action Amid Minimum Wage Crisis

Published

on

Tension is mounting in states yet to implement the ₦70,000 minimum wage, as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a strike set for December 1, 2024, for workers in non-compliant states.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

As of late October, 24 states had not yet implemented the new wage, despite assurances from the Federal Government of support for the policy. The government had promised an economic council meeting in mid-October to urge governors to comply with the wage law, signed by President Bola Tinubu in August.

By the end of October, only 12 states had fully implemented the new wage, including Edo, Anambra, Adamawa, Ogun, Delta, Ebonyi, Abia, Kebbi, Kogi, Borno, Gombe, and Jigawa. Other states, such as Lagos, Ondo, Bayelsa, Kano, Niger, and Kaduna, have committed to implementing the new wage by November, while states like Osun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, and Imo have yet to set a start date.

Meanwhile, Ekiti, Sokoto, Benue, Bauchi, Plateau, Zamfara, Nasarawa, Taraba, Yobe, and Katsina have yet to clarify their positions on the ₦70,000 wage.

The NLC has issued a strong warning to lagging states, demanding that all issues be resolved by the end of November, or face indefinite strikes starting December 1. NLC President Joe Ajaero criticized the delays as “blatant disregard” for workers’ rights amidst worsening economic conditions and vowed that industrial action would continue until all states comply with the law.

With the deadline rapidly approaching, Nigerian workers are bracing for action, determined to secure their rightful wages and seek justice.
