Nigeria’s Super Eagles Ready for Action as They Train Ahead of Benin Clash

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are preparing for their first training session at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan ahead of their eagerly awaited Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Benin on Thursday. Ahead of the session, Coach Augustine Eguavoen expressed optimism about the team’s readiness, saying, “We have 22 players here, with one more joining us on Wednesday. The atmosphere in Abidjan is great, and we’re excited for a productive first training session as we prepare for the match.”

The squad includes key players like Captain William Ekong and Africa’s Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, along with Ademola Lookman, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Olaoluwa Aina, Victor Collins, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, and Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi. Additional arrivals include Germany-based forward Victor Boniface and South Africa-based goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, and forward Kelechi Iheanacho have also joined the squad, alongside several other key players.

With 10 points from their first four matches and a flawless defensive record, the Super Eagles are confident heading into the match at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny. This venue has been favorable for them in past tournaments, especially during the 2023 AFCON.

Captain Ekong noted, “Our familiarity with the stadium gives us an edge, and we aim to build on our previous positive experiences here. We are fully focused on preparing for another strong performance on Thursday.”

He also acknowledged the challenge posed by Benin, who are also competing for a spot in the finals, but emphasized, “Our goal is to secure three points from this match.”

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Senegalese referee Issa Sy to officiate the match, which will kick off at 7:00 PM CIV time (8:00 PM Nigeria time].
