HURIWA Slams Fuel Price Increases As Scheme To Reward Tinubu’s Cronies

Published

on

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has condemned the ongoing fuel price increases, alleging that they are a strategy designed to financially benefit President Bola Tinubu’s associates. In a statement issued by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group argued that the repeated hikes are not intended to help ordinary Nigerians but instead serve the interests of those close to the current administration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Onwubiko emphasized that the policy’s primary objective is to enrich the cronies and business affiliates of those in power, not to alleviate the struggles of everyday citizens. He stated that these fuel price hikes have led to skyrocketing costs for basic necessities, making it harder for impoverished Nigerians to afford essential items. This, he argued, has contributed to widespread malnutrition, hunger, and rising mortality rates.

HURIWA also expressed concern over the growing divide between the wealthy oil sector stakeholders who are profiting from these increases, while the poor continue to suffer. The organization urged oil companies to implement corporate social responsibility programs to ease the economic burden on Nigerians, warning that rising public anger could lead to social unrest.

In support of claims made by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), HURIWA backed allegations that companies like Dangote Refinery are conspiring to artificially inflate fuel prices. The group called on the government to activate the Port Harcourt Refinery and other state-owned refineries as a means to mitigate the crisis.

The statement concluded with a call for the government to reverse policies that deepen poverty for the majority while benefiting a select few, and to take immediate steps to restore the value of the Naira to prevent further economic decline.

Taking over leadership at the JAMB headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, Aina succeeds Professor Ishaq Oloyede, whose 10-year, two-term tenure concluded on July 31, 2026. When the appointment was first announced, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, highlighted Aina’s deep background in digital infrastructure, public-sector reforms, and national examination systems, noting his historic milestone as one of Nigeria’s youngest computer engineering professors.

In his inaugural address, Aina acknowledged the foundation laid by his predecessor—who is widely credited with modernizing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)—and vowed to expand on those achievements.
