Hoddle: Cole Palmer’s Potential Stifled by Maresca’s Tactical Decisions

Hoddle believes that Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s tactical approach played a key role in Palmer’s inability to make a significant impact on the match. Despite being one of Chelsea’s main attacking threats, Palmer’s performance was subdued, with Hoddle pointing out the tactical adjustments made by Maresca that limited his influence.
On Stadium Astro, Hoddle explained that Palmer was not utilized in a central midfield role, where he could have been more dynamic. Instead, Maresca moved right-back Malo Gusto into midfield, a decision Hoddle feels restricted Palmer’s freedom to express himself.
“I think they missed a trick by not using Palmer more centrally,” Hoddle remarked. “There are times when you need players like Palmer to roam and take on a more creative role, like a number 10.”
He further elaborated, saying that Palmer’s positioning as an inside forward, with Pedro Neto playing wide, stifled his impact. It wasn’t until the second half when Neto switched sides that Hoddle saw a potential improvement in their connection. “Palmer tends to perform better when he’s in that space,” he added.
Nigeria’s Minister of Regional Development, Engr. “After 16 years of wearing the Nigeria jersey, representing my country and giving everything I had for this beautiful sport, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football… I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time.”
She concluded her farewell message with deep appreciation, stating that she steps away from international duty carrying 86 total appearances, zero regrets, and boundless gratitude for her teammates, fans, and the nation.
Joining the global wave of recognition, CAF honored her monumental impact on African women’s football via social media, writing:
