Dogara: Nigeria’s Constitution Makes Presidential Impeachment ‘Unrealistic

Dogara, a legal expert, explained that the Constitution’s impeachment process is ineffective, making it nearly impossible to remove a sitting president, regardless of misconduct.
Speaking at a national dialogue organized by lawmakers advocating for a parliamentary system, Dogara expressed support for a bill, backed by 60 lawmakers, proposing a shift from a presidential to a parliamentary system, with a prime minister replacing the president’s role.
Dogara argued that Nigeria’s current system was adopted from the U.S. without considering key differences between the countries. He elaborated:
“In Nigeria, Section 143 lacks a practical structure for impeachment. Ultimately, any attempt by the National Assembly is deferred to a panel of politicians considered to have ‘impeccable character.’
“I don’t know where we can find these ‘angels.’ Their decision is final, with no appeal possible by the National Assembly or any Nigerian court. Furthermore, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), appointed by the president, appoints these seven people—making the system unrealistic.”
Rauf Aregbesola, a former governor and minister, also spoke at the event, describing the country’s current state as “deeply troubled” and calling for urgent reform. He warned that Nigeria’s declining economic, political, and social conditions could lead to a revolutionary response from the people.
Aregbesola added, “The idea of one individual governing 220 million people is absurd. Any system that denies people their rights will face resistance. If all else fails, people may rebel. If we truly consider these risks, we’ll strive for the best possible governance system..

The Arrest and Detention: Nasera explained that the miners went to the site to earn a living to feed their families before NSCDC personnel arrested them and held them in custody for three days, allegedly refusing release efforts.

Suspicious Circumstances: Raising questions about the sudden deaths, Nasera noted that the detainees had eaten well the day before, speculating that heat exposure or some form of administered substance may have been involved.
