Edo APC Alleges Last-Minute Civil Service Conversions By Outgoing Governor Obaseki

Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has raised concerns over alleged actions by outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki to convert political appointees into permanent civil servants just six days before his tenure ends.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Prince Kassim Afegbua, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) transition committee, made the claim in a statement to the press on Wednesday in Benin City, according to DAILY POST.

Afegbua alleged that Obaseki is converting Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistants into full-time civil servants. He noted that in September 2024 alone, 186 such appointments were made, significantly increasing the number of aides around the governor. Additionally, he claimed that the governor is in the process of absorbing another 152 aides, further straining the state’s financial resources.

Afegbua stated that these conversions appear aimed at saddling the incoming administration with an excessive wage burden, even as Edo State is already weighed down by substantial debt.

“It has come to our attention that Governor Obaseki is converting his Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistants into permanent civil service positions,” he stated, adding that Obaseki has neglected civil service recruitment for the past eight years and only recently established the Civil Service Commission two weeks ago.

He accused Obaseki of using these last-minute appointments to drain state resources, describing the move as a “disservice” to the incoming administration. Afegbua warned that any improperly recruited individuals, or those with backdated appointments, would be dismissed once Okpebholo assumes office.

He concluded by emphasizing that civil service recruitment should be based on necessity and adhere strictly to due process.

Joshua has been working in Spain with Usyk as part of his recovery and return to full fitness following a December car accident, after which he sustained minor injuries but has since resumed structured training.

Speaking to The Independent, Usyk praised Joshua’s commitment in camp, describing him as highly focused and determined.

He also called for continued support for Joshua during a difficult phase in his career, urging fans not to turn against fighters during setbacks, but to stand by them as part of the sport.

Usyk acknowledged that Joshua is nearing a full return but stressed the need for patience as he continues recovery.

Usyk himself is preparing for his own upcoming bout scheduled for May 23 in Egypt, where he will face kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven.
