EFCC Re-Arraigns Former Kwara Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed Over N5.78 Billion Fraud Charges. The re-arraignment occurred on October 21, 2024, before Justice Mahmud Abdulgafar at the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin.
This legal proceeding follows the transfer of the previous judge, Justice Evelyn Anyadike, which necessitated a fresh start for the trial that began in April 2024, where both defendants pleaded not guilty to the original 12 charges. The new charges include allegations that Ahmed and Banu conspired to divert funds designated for teachers’ salaries and state security for personal use, including the improper spending of N1.61 billion on private jet charters.
The EFCC’s case alleges that Ahmed illegally spent N1 billion from the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board’s funds for civil servant salaries, which were originally allocated for educational projects. Additional charges involve the unlawful transfer of nearly N991 million from the same fund to repay loans to a bank, violating the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Act.
During the court session, EFCC counsel Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, presented the charges, which were accepted by the court. Both defendants pleaded not guilty again. Their lawyers requested bail, citing their compliance with previous bail conditions. Justice Abdulgafar granted bail at N100 million each, requiring two sureties, one of whom must be a serving or retired Permanent Secretary.
The case has been adjourned until December 4-5, 2024, for trial commencement.
