France Plans New Immigration Law For 2025
France Plans New Immigration Law For 2025. French authorities are set to introduce a new immigration law in 2025 as part of a concerted effort by the right-wing government to tighten immigration policies.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Government spokeswoman Maud Bregeon announced the need for a new law during an interview with broadcaster BFMTV, highlighting the shift in French politics following the recent legislative elections that resulted in a hung parliament.
The proposed legislation aims to strengthen border controls and address concerns surrounding undocumented migrants, particularly in light of recent violent incidents that have intensified debates on immigration. One key provision under consideration is extending the detention period for undocumented migrants classified as dangerous, potentially increasing the maximum detention time from 90 to 210 days.
While there has already been a recent immigration law passed in December, many amendments were rejected by the Constitutional Council, and the upcoming bill is expected to build on those provisions, with possible modifications and additional measures. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, known for his hardline stance on immigration, has indicated intentions to reinstate the offense of illegal residence among other stringent measures.
Despite the government’s focus on new legislation, Gabriel Attal, leader of President Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party in parliament, expressed skepticism about the need for a new law, emphasizing that priority should be placed on ensuring effective state control over immigration rather than simply passing legislation for its own sake.
