Coalition Accuses Lagos Assembly Members Of Being ‘Worst Lawbreakers’ In Nigeria, Says Alimosho LG Chairman
Coalition Accuses Lagos Assembly Members Of Being ‘Worst Lawbreakers’ In Nigeria, Says Alimosho LG Chairman. Lagos State Civil Society Coalition says the House of Assembly overreached its legislative powers with the purported suspension of Jelili Sulaimon, the chairman of Alimosho local government, describing several of the lawmakers as “lawbreakers.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement on Thursday, the coalition said the action of the Lagos parliament and its speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, “is a direct assault on local government autonomy.”
The statement was signed by Shina Loremikan of Campaign Against Impunity and Tobi Johnson of Campaign for Democracy.
“It is important to emphasise that while the Lagos State House of Assembly holds the powers to create laws for the administration of local government councils, these powers do not extend to interfering in areas that the Constitution explicitly reserves for local government. The management and regulation of markets, for example, are matters that fall squarely within the constitutional jurisdiction of local government councils,” the coalition said.
The group specifically condemned the attempt to justify the parliament’s action by its member, Stephen Ogundipe, chairman of the Committee on Information, Strategy and Security.
“Hon. Ogundipe’s remarks, which attempt to justify the Assembly’s interference in local government functions by invoking Sections 7 and 8 of the Constitution, betray an alarming disregard for the actual intent of these provisions.
“Sections 7 and 8 of the Constitution are explicitly designed to protect and enhance the autonomy of local government councils, ensuring their ability to manage their affairs without undue interference. The Assembly, as Hon. Ogundipe suggests, cannot supplant these constitutional provisions with its own willful interpretation aimed at exerting control over local government operations.
“These sections do not, and cannot, be interpreted as giving the State House of Assembly tyrannical powers to control or override the functions of local governments,” the group said.
According to the coalition, the Lagos parliament has no power to hire and fire a local government chair.
It added that the legislature’s functions do not include disregarding the law and twisting it to suit the “selfish and sinister interests of members of the legislature.”
“Lawmakers are not lawbreakers. Unfortunately, Hon. Ogundipe has shown the world that members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are simply lawbreakers of the worst kind,” the group said.

Economic Earthquake: Nigeria Leaves Previous Financial Records In The Dust With Historic Remittance Inflow!
According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), diaspora remittance inflows processed via International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) hit $947 million in July 2026, marking the highest monthly total ever documented through formal financial networks. This record-breaking figure demonstrates major headway toward the $1 billion monthly target championed by CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso. Furthermore, IMTO inflows climbed to $3.8 billion during the first seven months of 2026—a 50.2 percent surge compared to the same timeframe in 2025—underscoring a robust consolidation of formal channel transfers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This steep growth stems from a series of central bank reforms designed to enhance the competitiveness, transparency, and accessibility of formal remittance pathways. Key measures highlighted by the apex bank include transitioning to a market-determined exchange rate, updating regulatory guidelines for IMTOs, deploying the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN), and fostering closer collaboration with diaspora groups, banks, and transfer operators. Additionally, the CBN tightened compliance by mandating that all remittance transactions route through designated settlement accounts managed by authorized dealer banks.
Beyond the headline statistics, these rising diaspora flows significantly reinforce Nigeria’s external financing standing, elevate foreign exchange transparency and liquidity, and provide vital backing for household livelihoods and investments. Reflecting on the milestone, Governor Cardoso noted that while reaching $947 million in July brings the country to the doorstep of their ambitious $1 billion monthly goal initially set nearly two years prior, the long-term focus remains on sustaining these growth conditions to consistently maintain monthly inflows above $1 billion.

“DISASTER IN WAITING!” How Atiku’s Subsidy Blueprint Could Devastate Salaries And Paralyses The Nation, Warns Yilwatda!.
All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda has cautioned that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s proposal to reinstate the petrol subsidy could trigger a return of crippling fuel queues and undermine the financial capacity of governments to sustain current minimum wage payments. Yilwatda made these remarks in Abuja while hosting a delegation of economic stakeholders who gathered to converse about national economic progress, ongoing policy reforms, and sustainable growth paths.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku, who serves as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, had previously declared his intention to bring back the petrol subsidy should he win the presidency in 2027, while also criticizing the current administration for failing to transparently account for savings generated by the subsidy removal. President Bola Tinubu initially scrapped the subsidy on May 29, 2023, a move that spiked pump prices and amplified the cost of living. Urging citizens to look past any short-term relief at the pump, Yilwatda stressed that the true burden of a subsidized regime falls on government revenues and critical spending.
Elaborating on the broader fiscal implications, Yilwatda noted that eliminating the subsidy has successfully boosted federal allocations to states, significantly strengthening sub-national finances that previously struggled with partial or delayed salary and pension payments. He warned that any move to resurrect the policy threatens both infrastructural funding and the consistent payment of higher wages, while also risking a relapse into the chronic university disruptions and underfunding of education witnessed under past administrations.

Upon the reading of the charge, the defendant entered a plea of not guilty. While the prosecution requested a trial date and a remand order, defense counsel Benson Ndakara informed the court that a bail application had already been filed and served. Due to the court’s heavy schedule, the bail application could not be heard immediately. Consequently, Justice Ogazi ordered the defendant remanded in Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) custody until September 9, when the court will hear the bail application.
