According to the September 2024 Human Rights Dashboard released by the NHRC on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, road accidents claimed 191 lives, while 141 individuals died due to assaults by armed groups, including bandits, terrorists, and kidnappers during the same month.

In addition to the fatalities, 69 individuals suffered various injuries from road incidents. Dr. Tony Ojukwu, the NHRC Executive Secretary, emphasized that these road accidents severely compromise the human rights of affected families.

“Today, we highlight the tragic loss of lives resulting from road accidents, which undermines the enjoyment of human rights for many families,” Ojukwu stated.

He referenced reports from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), noting that around 1,471 people lost their lives in road crashes during the first quarter of 2024. He called for immediate and sustainable actions from the government and the FRSC to address this crisis and safeguard the welfare of motorists in Nigeria.

The Human Rights Dashboard also reported that the NHRC received 305,300 complaints related to human rights violations in September 2024, raising alarms about the escalating number of such complaints nationwide.

The analysis indicated that the North-West region had the highest number of human rights violations, followed closely by the North-Central region. Complaints related to the infringement of religious freedom topped the list, attributed to certain state governments imposing restrictions on this right.

“Religious freedom emerged as a significant issue in September due to restrictions imposed by some state governments,” the NHRC noted, emphasizing that religious freedom has become a contested right in Nigeria.

Additionally, violations of human dignity by law enforcement and denials of access to justice also saw a notable number of complaints in September 2024. There was an increase in reports of sexual and gender-based violence, including domestic abuse and rape, as well as a rise in child rights violations, particularly in cases of defilement and abandonment.

The NHRC highlighted the impact of economic hardship on children, noting that many are adversely affected by the country’s challenging economic conditions.

Kaduna, Benue, Katsina, Plateau, and Sokoto states recorded the highest numbers of fatalities in September 2024, with a total of 141 killings and 113 kidnapping incidents reported.

Ojukwu underscored the significance of the dashboard in fostering accountability, transparency, and human rights advocacy in Nigeria. He urged the media to continue amplifying the voices of marginalized and vulnerable groups.

Additionally, Ojukwu condemned the excessive use of force against protesters during the recent #EndBadGovernance and #FearlessInOctober demonstrations, describing the actions of security personnel as serious violations of Nigerians’ fundamental rights.

“During Nigeria’s Independence Day, we observed the #FearlessInOctober protests, which reflect the public’s ongoing demand for accountability and good governance following the earlier #EndBadGovernance protests. We are greatly concerned about the excessive force and tear gas used by the Nigeria Police Force against protesters in Abuja. Such actions represent a grave violation of the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens.”

Major Breakthrough As Police Arrest Suspects In Sophisticated Microsoft Email Hack.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF–NCCC) has arrested high-profile cybercrime suspects linked to a sophisticated Microsoft 365 phishing operation that targeted the email systems of major corporate organisations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The arrests followed actionable intelligence received from Microsoft Corporation in the United States through the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which exposed the deployment of an advanced phishing toolkit known as RaccoonO365. The toolkit was designed to create counterfeit Microsoft login pages capable of harvesting user credentials and unlawfully accessing corporate, financial, and educational email platforms.

Briefing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the cybercrime centre launched a coordinated, intelligence-led operation in partnership with Microsoft, the FBI, and the United States Secret Service. He explained that investigations traced multiple cases of unauthorised Microsoft 365 account access recorded between January and September 2025 to phishing emails crafted to closely mimic legitimate Microsoft authentication portals.

According to police findings, the cyberattacks resulted in business email compromise, data breaches, and significant financial losses across several jurisdictions. Acting on precise intelligence, NPF–NCCC operatives conducted targeted operations in Lagos and Edo states, leading to the arrest of three suspects. Searches carried out at their residences yielded laptops, mobile phones, and other digital devices, which forensic analysis directly linked to the fraudulent activities.

Further investigations identified Okitipi Samuel, also known by the aliases “RaccoonO365” and “Moses Felix,” as the principal suspect and alleged developer of the phishing infrastructure. Police said he operated a Telegram channel through which phishing links were sold in exchange for cryptocurrency and hosted fake login portals on Cloudflare using stolen or fraudulently obtained email credentials.

The police clarified that there was no evidence connecting the two other arrested individuals to the creation or management of the phishing scheme. The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to protecting the country’s digital environment through the use of advanced technology, enhanced international cooperation, and thorough investigative and prosecutorial processes aimed at combating evolving cyber threats.
