Animashaun stated this at the 64th Independence Day goodwill messages to the people of the council, held at the Secretariat, Ita-Marun, in Epe on Tuesday.

She said, “Our journey of 64 years has not been without its ups and downs but we are here to celebrate because we are resolute in facing our challenges and forging ahead with renewed hope to reach the promised land.

“As we move on to the next phase of our nationhood, we must remain united in shunning anti-social, ethno-religious conflicts, and other divisive schemes but channel our gifts, talents, ability and energy towards building the Nigeria of our dreams, where we would see ourselves as one.

“Let us focus on what unites us more as a people.”

She advocated the need for Nigerians to live as an indivisible entity where peace, justice, equity and fairness abound.

“As we celebrate and intercede for our nation today and always, I advocate the need for us to reflect more on what unites us as a people rather than what divides us. The oneness of Nigeria remains more advantageous despite the challenges we are facing as a nation.

“Indeed, we are known for our intelligence, resilience, resourcefulness, confidence and hard work. Let us today take pride in celebrating our dignity, pride and unity in diversity as we confidently look forward to Renewing our Hope for a better Nigeria,” Animashaun added.

She also advised Nigerians and Epe residents to remain supportive individually or collectively towards nation-building to move the country and local government forward.

According to her, citizens need to propagate unity, irrespective of their political, religious and ethnic divides, and to rally round President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

She urged Governor Sanwo-Olu to remain resolute in ensuring residents enjoyed unprecedented transformation, especially in the area of security of lives and property, and economy.

While speaking on Tuesday during the event to mark Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration at Lagos House, Marina, Governor Sanwo-Olu also advised the residents on unity.

He pledged to enhance transparency in governance by actively engaging residents in the state’s developmental programmes.

He emphasised the need for public cooperation to not only maintain Lagos’ leadership status but also elevate it further.

  • According to an insider source, prison warders entered Bolarinwa’s cell while he was asleep, woke him up suddenly, and pushed him to the ground, causing him to fall.

  • Following the alleged altercation, he was rushed to the Military Hospital on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, for medical attention and theatre evaluation.

  • A family source corroborated that relatives were later informed of the incident, claiming that Bolarinwa reported being severely beaten and subjected to physical abuse during a search for a mobile phone.

  • The family source also expressed deep safety concerns, alleging that this incident follows several previous attempts on his life.

Background on Conviction

Bolarinwa has been serving a prison sentence following his initial remand in April 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

  • He was arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja on a 13-count charge encompassing forgery, possession of false documents, and obtaining money by false pretences amounting to ₦266.5 million.

  • The EFCC stated that Bolarinwa deceived Kodef Clearing Resources Limited by posing as a military general and claiming that former President Muhammadu Buhari had shortlisted him for appointment as Chief of Army Staff, extracting large sums to “facilitate” the role.

  • Investigators also recovered forged appointment letters, military identification cards, recommendations bearing former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s name, and several firearms from his Alagbado residence.

  • Although he initially pleaded not guilty, Bolarinwa changed his plea to “guilty” during court proceedings on July 7, 2022.

  • Justice Taiwo convicted him on all 13 counts, sentencing him to seven years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine, ordering asset forfeitures, and directing him to pay ₦20 million in restitution.
