#NigeriaAt64: Independence Day Unrest: Citizens Gather In Lagos, Abuja To Protest Over High Living Costs
#NigeriaAt64: Independence Day Unrest: Citizens Gather In Lagos, Abuja To Protest Over High Living Costs. As Nigeria marks 64 years of independence from British colonial rule on Tuesday, thousands of citizens took to the streets in the nation’s economic hub, Lagos, and political capital, Abuja, to protest rising living and energy costs in Africa’s most populous country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
For many, this Independence Day was not a moment of celebration but a time to call on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to tackle the skyrocketing inflation and severe economic hardship gripping the nation.
Dubbed “FearlessInOctober,” the October 1, 2024, protest gained momentum on social media, echoing themes from the August #EndBadGovernance protests. Both movements see young Nigerians demanding the reversal of the fuel subsidy removal and the hike in electricity tariffs.
In Abuja’s Utako district, protesters brandished the Nigerian Green-White-Green flag alongside banners with slogans like “EndBadGovernance,” “DiasporaVoting,” and “EndHighLivingCosts.” Meanwhile, in Lagos, a similar scene unfolded at the Ikeja Underbridge, where youths halted traffic, holding signs like “Hunger Dey” and demanding the reversal of policies on privatisation and deregulation.
A Channels TV correspondent reported from Ikeja, capturing the widespread discontent over high living costs, with demands for a higher minimum wage. Activist Omoyele Sowore joined the Lagos protest, leading a march to Gani Fawehinmi Park.
Security forces in both Lagos and Abuja maintained a visible yet distant presence at protest sites. Demonstrations also erupted in other states, defying government warnings.
Critics argue that Tinubu’s policies, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange rates, have driven the inflation and escalating energy costs that are crippling the economy. Since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, fuel prices have soared from N200 to over N1,000 per litre, and electricity tariffs have quadrupled, straining businesses and households alike.
In his Independence Day address, Tinubu urged Nigerians for patience, acknowledging the difficulties caused by his reforms while promising that efforts are underway to reduce the high cost of living.
