No fewer than 300 sanitation offenders were arrested and prosecuted by a Special Court for violating sanitation laws in Kwara State during the monthly sanitation exercise held on Saturday.
The exercise, which took place for three hours between 7:00 am and 10:00 am on the last Saturday of every month, was conducted across the state.
The offenders were arrested in Ilorin, the state capital, during the exercise.
The state government, however, commended residents for their compliance with the sanitation regulations, contributing to the success of the exercise held in various towns and villages across the state, including the capital.
A statement by the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Kamaldeen Aliagan, quoted the state Commissioner for Environment, Nafisat Musa-Buge, as making this known in Ilorin while answering questions from journalists at a checkpoint along the Ilorin/Ogbomoso express road shortly after the completion of the exercise.
“Let me use this medium to express our delight at the increased level of compliance by the good people of Kwara State towards the successful sanitation exercise, particularly in the metropolis. I urge you all to sustain this momentum,” she said.
The commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abubakar Ayinla, during the inspection, expressed disappointment that despite the government’s enlightenment and awareness campaigns, some people still flouted the sanitation laws.
She said, “Despite the enlightenment programmes and campaigns on radio and other electronic media, it is sad and unfortunate that almost 300 sanitation offenders were apprehended within the metropolis and subsequently charged to various mobile courts during the exercise.”
The Commissioner urged residents to strictly adhere to the three-hour sanitation exercise, designated for cleaning their residential and business environments to maintain a clean and safe environment for healthy living.
Musa-Buge also appreciated the mobile court judges, monitoring and security agents, transport unions, and relevant bodies for their dedication in the discharge of their duties.

Three suspects, identified as Chinedu David (29), Ezeagwu Chukwuma (38), and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi (45), were arrested during the operation. Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani announced that the suspects were apprehended Saturday night while transporting the contraband in an unregistered MAN diesel truck.
The truck and the items, which included dozens of sacks of military uniforms and cartons of substances believed to be illicit drugs, were taken into custody. Preliminary investigation suggests the military gear was destined for the South-East region of Nigeria. Investigators are working to identify the source, owner, and intended recipients of the goods. They are also examining the level of involvement of the suspects and tracking potential co-conspirators.
While CP Tijani assured Lagos residents that the discovery poses no immediate security threat to the state as the items were being moved elsewhere, he expressed concern regarding the recovery due to historical connections between criminal organizations and the use of military-style uniforms. A police source confirmed that the truck’s driver and assistant were the first suspects detained, followed by two additional suspects who later came to a Surulere police station claiming ownership of the seized items.
