Controversy And Frustration Over Delayed Completion Of Anyigba-Dekina-Shintaku Road

Road users traveling through Shintaku in Bassa Local Government Area to Anyigba in Dekina, Kogi State, are enduring immense hardship due to the deteriorating condition of the Anyigba-Dekina-Shintaku road, which has become a hotspot for criminal activities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Originally constructed in the 1960s, the road was slated for rehabilitation in 2017 by former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, in honor of the late Lieutenant Colonel Muhammed Ali, a native of the area who died fighting insurgents in Northern Nigeria. Although the project initially began with 21 earth-moving machines on site, most of the equipment was mysteriously withdrawn shortly after work commenced.

The contract was awarded to a Kano-based company, sparking concerns about the firm’s credibility due to its lack of a known address. Local leaders, including former Bassa Local Government Chairman, Hon. Shuaib Imam, expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address the road’s dire condition.

“The road is a nightmare for our people. A journey that should take minutes now takes hours,” Imam stated, calling for urgent government intervention.

In 2022, the Federal Government re-awarded the rehabilitation project to TEC Engineering Company for ₦65.2 billion, with a February 2024 completion deadline. Despite the allocation of ₦1 billion to mobilize the contractor, the project remains stalled, with little visible progress on the ground.

Frustrated residents, motorists, and local leaders, including the Shabba of Bassa, HRM Alhaji Yahaya Lerama, have urged the government to intervene swiftly. “The road is in terrible shape. Crossing the river now costs ₦8,000 per vehicle, up from ₦3,000,” Lerama said, appealing for immediate government action.

Motorists and bikers have also lamented the deplorable state of the road, which has worsened during the rainy season. One motorcyclist, Baba Dauda, shared, “Every day, we risk our health traveling on this road. Some villages are completely cut off, and vehicles constantly break down.”

Engr. Olayinka Onogoye, the Federal Controller of Works in Kogi State, confirmed the slow pace of work and attributed it to multiple factors, including the kidnapping of an expatriate worker, weather conditions, and design issues. He reassured the public that work would resume after the rainy season, noting that both the Minister of Works and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are committed to ensuring the project’s completion.

Despite numerous attempts to contact TEC Engineering for comment, the company has not responded to requests for information regarding the delays.

Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has called on Nigerians to stop targeting the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, with their frustrations regarding the state of the nation. She contends that the clergyman is being incorrectly singled out and is not to blame for Nigeria’s current difficulties.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Ezekwesili emphasized the following points in her statement:

  • She characterized Adeboye as a humble servant of God who has spent his life advocating for peace and national development.

  • While acknowledging that many Nigerians want religious leaders to be more vocal in demanding government accountability, she maintained that Adeboye has consistently offered prayers and spoken up for the nation.

  • She explained that long-standing issues—such as systemic corruption, economic hardship, and insecurity—have left Nigerians exhausted and deeply distrustful of politicians, institutions, and influential figures.

  • She warned that the country has a tendency to prioritize less significant issues rather than addressing urgent national crises.

  • Ezekwesili noted that while Adeboye typically responds to criticism with “dignified silence,” she felt compelled to speak publicly to refocus attention on the “urgency of this moment” and the core issue: the need for religious leaders to help rescue the nation from “ineffectual, corrupt, and selfish politicians”.

The security operation led to significant disruptions, including:

  • Checkpoints and barricades were established on major roads leading to the Villa, restricting both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

  • Many employees were unable to reach their workplaces due to these movement restrictions.

  • Heavy traffic congestion occurred along the corridors of the Supreme Court, the National Assembly, and the Federal Secretariat, leaving many commuters stranded and forcing others to find alternative routes.

The demonstration, organized by human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore alongside the Take It Back Movement, was planned to begin at Eagle Square before moving toward the Presidential Villa. The primary goal of the protest is to demand the immediate release of all victims kidnapped nationwide. Furthermore, organizers have called for President Bola Tinubu to either ensure the safety and release of the captives or resign, citing a perceived failure of the government to protect citizens. This protest reflects growing public outcry regarding the frequency of school attacks and kidnappings, as well as a broader demand for increased accountability and improved security across Nigeria.
