Edmundo Urrutia Flees Venezuela, Vows to Continue Fight for Democracy in Exile....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Edmundo Urrutia, who claims to be the legitimate president-elect of Venezuela instead of Nicolas Maduro, has fled to Spain after weeks of hiding. The 75-year-old opposition leader arrived in Madrid on Sunday, determined to continue his battle for Venezuela’s freedom and democracy.

Upon arrival, Urrutia released an audio statement expressing confidence that the fight for Venezuela’s freedom will continue. His decision to leave Venezuela came after increasing threats to his life following the disputed July 28 election, in which Maduro declared victory. However, the opposition claims to have evidence proving Urrutia as the rightful winner of the election.

Opposition and International Support

Opposition leader Maria Machado emphasized that Urrutia’s life was in danger, citing a “brutal wave of repression” following the contested election. Urrutia replaced Machado on the ballot after she was barred from running by institutions loyal to Maduro, who has been accused of widespread human rights violations.

Venezuela’s electoral authority, loyal to the regime, declared Maduro the winner. However, the international community has largely refused to recognize the results due to the lack of a detailed vote breakdown. In response, authorities issued an arrest warrant for Urrutia, and Maduro called for his imprisonment alongside Machado, who remains in hiding.

Urrutia’s Escape to Spain

Urrutia’s departure from Venezuela followed three ignored summonses from prosecutors, with Urrutia insisting that complying would put his freedom at risk. In a statement, Machado criticized the regime for its increasing efforts to silence Urrutia through threats, arrest warrants, and attempts at coercion.

Urrutia’s escape marks a critical juncture for Venezuela’s opposition movement. Spain has granted the exiled leader asylum, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez calling Urrutia “a hero” whom Spain will support. Urrutia arrived at the Torrejon air base near Madrid with his spouse, escorted by a Spanish military plane.

Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Albares confirmed that there was no political negotiation behind Urrutia’s departure, asserting that it was a matter of humanitarian need.

Repression and International Condemnation

While Urrutia’s safety is now secured in Spain, Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek Saab dismissed his departure as “farcical theatre.” The investigation into Urrutia, which includes serious charges like usurpation of public functions and association with organized crime, remains ongoing. If convicted, Urrutia faces a potential 30-year prison sentence.

International voices have joined in condemning the repression faced by Urrutia and other opposition figures. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken praised Urrutia as “the best hope for democracy in Venezuela,” while the European Union’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, called for an end to arbitrary arrests and harassment by the Maduro regime.

A Disputed Election and a Nation in Crisis

The July 28 election results remain highly disputed. The opposition claims that their tally of polling station-level ballots shows Urrutia won two-thirds of the vote. However, Venezuela’s electoral authority has not provided a detailed breakdown of the results, blaming a cyberattack on their systems—a claim that remains unsubstantiated.

Post-election violence in Venezuela has resulted in the deaths of 27 people and injuries to 192, with over 2,400 individuals arrested. The aftermath of this disputed election echoes the 2018 election, where Maduro also claimed victory amidst accusations of fraud.

Since taking office in 2013, Maduro has overseen the collapse of Venezuela’s economy, with the country’s GDP plummeting by 80% in a decade. The economic devastation has forced over seven million Venezuelans to flee the country, further deepening the crisis.
