Turkey’s annual inflation rate has further decreased to 52% in August, down from 61.8% in July, according to official data released on Tuesday. This decline marks a significant step in the nation’s ongoing battle against soaring prices, following a peak inflation rate of 85% in October 2022.
The Turkish central bank began increasing interest rates last year after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shifted his stance on orthodox monetary policy. This change aimed to combat the high inflation that has plagued the country for years. Following a brief decrease to 38.2% in June 2023, inflation surged again, reaching 75% in May before starting to decline once more in June.
In August, the largest price increases were observed in education, which surged by 120.8%, followed by housing at 101.5%, and hotels and restaurants at 67.7%, as reported by the Turkish statistics institute. Month-to-month comparisons show that consumer prices rose by 2.5% in August.
Looking ahead, a central bank survey of investors predicts that inflation could reach 43.3% by the end of 2024. In an effort to control rising costs, the government opted not to raise the minimum wage in July, having previously increased it in the past two years.
Despite the official figures, independent economists argue that the actual inflation rate in Turkey may be significantly higher, estimating it to be around 90.35%. As Turkey navigates these economic challenges, the public and policymakers remain focused on the effectiveness of the current measures to stabilize prices and restore economic confidence.
