Facing its worst drought in a century, Namibia has announced plans to cull over 700 wild animals to address severe food insecurity. The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism disclosed that the culling will target 83 elephants, 30 hippos, 60 buffalo, 50 impala, 100 blue wildebeest, and 300 zebras.

These animals will be sourced from national parks and communal areas that maintain “sustainable game numbers,” with the culling to be carried out by professional hunters, according to CNN. The initiative aims to reduce wildlife populations in regions where resources are strained, thereby mitigating the impact of the drought.

Namibia declared a state of emergency in May, as the drought left approximately 1.4 million people—nearly half the country’s population—struggling with severe food insecurity. By culling wildlife, the government hopes to alleviate pressure on water resources and minimize conflicts between humans and elephants, which tend to escalate during times of drought.

“To this effect, 83 elephants from identified conflict areas will be culled, and meat will be allocated to the drought relief programme,” the ministry stated.

Southern Africa, home to more than 200,000 elephants, has also witnessed significant wildlife losses due to the drought. Meat from the culling will be distributed to those most affected, particularly in rural areas. Already, over 150 animals have been culled, providing more than 125,000 pounds of meat.
