Historic Discovery: Massive 2,492-Carat Diamond Unearthed in Botswana

The Karowe Diamond Mine, located in northeastern Botswana, approximately 430 kilometers (270 miles) from the capital city of Gaborone, is known for producing some of the world’s most remarkable diamonds. This latest discovery, however, has set a new benchmark. The 2,492-carat diamond is one of the largest rough diamonds ever recorded, and it was uncovered using Lucara’s advanced Mega Diamond Recovery X-ray technology.
Although the company has not yet provided a valuation or detailed assessment of the diamond’s quality, its sheer size places it among the most significant finds in diamond mining history. The stone is notably close in size to the legendary Cullinan Diamond, which weighed in at 3,016.75 carats when it was discovered in South Africa in 1905. The Cullinan remains the largest gem-quality diamond ever mined.
Lucara Diamond Corp. President and CEO William Lamb expressed the company’s excitement over the discovery, stating, “We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond.” This monumental find underscores Botswana’s position as one of the leading diamond producers in the world, with diamonds serving as the nation’s main source of income.
Before this discovery, the largest diamond found in Botswana was a 1,758-carat stone, also mined by Lucara in 2019 and named Sewelo. The latest find is set to eclipse the Sewelo diamond in significance, further solidifying Botswana’s reputation as a hub for large diamond discoveries.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi was scheduled to view the massive stone later on Thursday, marking another historic moment for the country’s rich diamond industry. As anticipation builds, the world waits to learn more about the value and future of this exceptional diamond.

The Federal Government has issued an urgent flood warning through the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre, cautioning that 915 communities spread across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) face severe flooding risks from August 27 to September 9, 2026. The 19 states categorized under the critical-risk threat are Kogi, Benue, Rivers, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo, encompassing major cities like Lokoja, Port Harcourt, Lagos, Ibadan, and Onitsha. According to Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, this impending threat is driven by factors such as continuous rainfall, saturated soils, rapid surface runoff, strained drainage networks, and swelling river levels. Residents in these vulnerable areas have been strongly advised to ready themselves for potential emergencies and identify secure evacuation routes.
African Action Congress (AAC) 2027 presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has cautioned citizens against falling for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s stance on reversing the fuel subsidy. In response via an X post, Sowore rejected Atiku’s remarks, asserting that the AAC remains the sole political party that has steadfastly opposed the subsidy removal from the outset.
