Obasanjo Slams Tinubu: Fuel Subsidy Returns Amid SoahttpsFormer President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has stated that the fuel subsidy removed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in June 2023 has effectively returned due to inflation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Obasanjo criticized the approach taken by Tinubu’s administration in eliminating the fuel subsidies. He argued that adequate measures should have been implemented before the subsidy removal.

“There’s a lot of work that needs to be done. Not just wake up one morning and say you removed the subsidy. Because of inflation, the subsidy that we have removed is not gone. It has come back,” Obasanjo emphasized.

He highlighted the need for boosting investor confidence in Nigeria, stating, “You have to go from a transactional economy to a transformational economy.”

Obasanjo’s comments come in the midst of ongoing hunger protests in Nigeria. These protests, which began on Thursday, reached their fifth day on Monday, with protesters demanding the reinstatement of the fuel subsidy regime.

In a Sunday broadcast, President Tinubu appealed to protesters to suspend their demonstrations. He described his administration’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy as painful but necessary, explaining that the subsidy had become a noose around the economic “jugular of our Nation and impeded our economic development and progress.”

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, core inflation reached an all-time high of 34.19 percent and 40.87 percent in June 2024.
