Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, executed by armed assailants on motorcycles. According to Channels Television, the gunfire resulted in the deaths of a soldier and one of the attackers, causing fear and concern among local residents, motorists, and travelers.

The attack led to significant delays for commuters, who had to wait several hours for the situation to stabilize. The Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated that he had not yet received details regarding the incident from the Owutu Police Division at the time of filing this report.

Two days earlier, suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) launched a series of attacks in Owerri, the capital of Imo State. Areas such as Ikenegbu, the Imo State University (IMSU) back gate, Wetheral Road, Amawusa, and the Toronto axis experienced sporadic gunfire, causing panic among residents.

The Imo State Police Command Spokesperson, Henry Okoye, stated that the gunmen used a guerrilla-style strategy, emerging from their hideouts to carry out surprise attacks before retreating. Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma has initiated a direct response to confront the gunmen and urged residents to report any suspicious activities to the police
