Nationwide Panic: 30 Million SIM Cards Face Shutdown Amid NIN Linkage CrisisGbenga Adebayo, Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria, has revealed that over 30 million phone lines are at risk of disconnection due to improper linkage with National Identification Numbers (NINs). This issue affects lines associated with devices such as car trackers, MiFi units, WiFi devices, and Point of Sale (POS) machines.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

“The figures are quite alarming. We’re talking about more than 30 million SIM cards, many embedded in digital devices like car trackers, POS systems, MiFis, and WiFis, that haven’t been properly linked to NINs,” Adebayo told News Central on Thursday.

This development follows recent disruptions caused by the blocking of lines not properly linked to NINs, in line with the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) deadline of July 31, 2024.

Since February 2024, telecom operators have been gradually disconnecting unlinked lines, following an NCC directive that mandated phased disconnections ending on July 31, 2024.

Adebayo noted that these disconnections stem from mismatches between telecom operators’ records and the National Identity Management Commission’s data.

“There are instances where NINs provided by individuals did not match our records,” he explained. “These issues need to be resolved at service centers for accurate verification.”

He clarified that the timing of the disconnections, which coincided with national protests, was purely coincidental and not intended to suppress communication.

“Although the disconnections happened around the time of planned protests, they were not meant to interfere with communication,” Adebayo stated. “We remain committed to serving our subscribers fairly and impartially.”

Adebayo stressed the importance of accurate data for maintaining a reliable national database and urged individuals to provide correct and consistent information during registration to avoid future problems.

“For a dependable national database, everyone must provide accurate information,” he urged. “This database’s reliability hinges on the public’s input.”

To address the current challenges, Adebayo mentioned that the commission has instructed all operators to temporarily reactivate disconnected lines to allow users to link their NINs properly.
