Kennedy-Ohanenye, currently embroiled in controversies over accusations of diverting N1.5 billion allocated for contractor payments, recounted a tense encounter with the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in Abuja on July 10, 2024.
In an exclusive interview with THISDAY, the minister divulged details of her refusal to endorse the $500 million loan, alongside an earlier $100 million loan, alleging that these funds included a disguised 40% kickback for World Bank personnel in Nigeria under the guise of consultation fees.
She expressed fears for her safety, attributing the scrutiny and targeting by the National Assembly and other entities to her stance against financial impropriety and her insistence on directing funds towards impactful projects benefiting the populace.
Kennedy-Ohanenye condemned the misuse of substantial sums for trivial purposes and stressed her commitment to implementing programs aimed at genuinely uplifting the lives of Nigerian citizens.
She emphasized, “I declined to sign the $500 million loan that was presented to me. There was also an earlier $100 million loan. Investigate what these loans were intended for. All loans, including those from the World Bank, involve a 40% kickback disguised as consultation fees for their staff in Nigeria.”
Highlighting the urgency of addressing these financial practices, she asserted, “My refusal has placed my safety at risk. Had I signed, I would have been entitled to a significant share of the loan, but I stood firm. This is why the National Assembly and others are targeting me.”
Kennedy-Ohanenye also raised concerns about the lack of transparency in loan conditions imposed by external entities, advocating for funds to be directly allocated to projects benefiting Nigerian women and their livelihoods.
She concluded, “I advocated against spending $100 million solely on financial literacy for women. Instead, empower them directly. Let me enact policies that truly transform lives. I’ve drafted an action plan aimed at achieving just that.”
