Ahmed Halilu, appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2022, is the brother of Aisha Buhari, the former First Lady. Victoria Irabor, the outgoing Company Secretary, is married to retired General Lucky Irabor, who was the Chief of Defence Staff and involved in contentious decisions during Godwin Emefiele’s tenure at the CBN.
Abubakar Minjibir, currently the Executive Director of Operations at NSPM’s Abuja factory, will temporarily assume the role of Managing Director.
A senior official from the central bank, speaking with Premium Times, confirmed that the affected officials have been asked to leave immediately.
This significant shakeup follows months after Jim Obazee, the special investigator appointed by President Tinubu to probe the CBN’s affairs under the Buhari administration, submitted his report. The report highlighted NSPM’s role in the controversial currency redesign policy led by Emefiele, which adversely affected individuals and businesses across Nigeria.
According to Obazee’s findings, the former central bank governor instructed the then-managing director of NSPM to redesign and reconfigure the old naira notes. Halilu informed Emefiele that the redesign would be time-consuming due to the complexity of the new security features, including watermarks, QR codes, and unique numbering styles. Despite these concerns, Emefiele proceeded with the policy, contracting the UK-based company De La Rue for GBP 205,000 to handle the redesign.
After De La Rue completed the redesign, NSPM was responsible for printing the new currency. However, the company struggled to meet the demand, resulting in a severe currency shortage across the country.
This recent shakeup is part of President Tinubu’s broader implementation of the Oronsaye Report, which recommends merging or scrapping various government agencies to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
