Transport Fares Skyrocket Amid Fuel Shortage: Abuja Residents Hit Hard!

While many filling stations are selling fuel at prices above N700 per liter, NNPCL retail stations are offering it at N617 per liter. This disparity has led to a hike in transport fares within the capital. For instance, the fare from Airport Junction to Kubwa has risen from N500 to N700, and the fare from Berger to Kubwa has also increased from N500 to N700, according to DAILY POST.
Benjamin Olatunji, a resident of Abuja, voiced his frustration over the recurring fuel scarcity in Nigeria, a country that produces crude oil. “It is frustrating. We keep having scarcity in a country that produces crude oil. I have been in the queue for nearly 3 hours but have yet to get the product,” he lamented.
Rukiyatu Adamu echoed his sentiments, highlighting the additional strain on Nigerians already facing economic hardship. “Honestly, Nigerians may be pushed into the Kenya situation if the economic hardship continues unabated. I can imagine a country producing crude but importing its by-product, fuel. To make matters worse, we keep having the issue of fuel scarcity. It is terrible, to say the least. I practically spent my whole day at the NNPCL filling station along Kubwa Expressway on Monday,” she said.
In response to the situation, the NNPCL has urged motorists not to engage in panic buying or hoarding fuel. In a statement on Monday, company spokesperson Olufemi Soneye attributed the looming scarcity to logistics and flood challenges. “Already, loading has commenced in areas where these challenges have subsided, and we are hoping the situation will continue to improve in the coming days and full normalcy will be restored,” the NNPCL stated.

Elaborating on his economic perspective, Omokri emphasized that poverty must always be evaluated relative to each nation’s unique economic realities and localized cost of living. He contrasted the Nigerian situation with the United States, pointing out that while ₦3,000 can cover daily requirements locally, attempting to live on an equivalent nominal value in the U.S. would constitute extreme poverty, underscoring his stance that contextual evaluation is vital.
Furthermore, the ambassador-designate critiqued the rigid application of the World Bank’s global poverty threshold—specifically the standard benchmark of living on less than $2 a day—arguing that international metrics fail to accurately reflect ground-level economic conditions in Nigeria unless adjusted for local purchasing power and actual domestic expenditures.
