Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, made this assertion during a retreat organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja. The event, themed “Labour Reforms and the Quest for Living Wage in Nigeria: A Focus on Legislative Intervention,” was attended by members of the Joint Senate and House Committees on Employment, Labour, and Productivity.

Onyejeocha underscored the committee’s recommendations as a strategic framework for implementing reforms aimed at enhancing labour conditions nationwide. She reiterated the government’s commitment, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to ensure fair treatment, protection, and adequate compensation for all workers.

Highlighting the pivotal role of the Tripartite Committee, which includes representatives from the government, private sector, and labour unions, Onyejeocha emphasized the comprehensive engagement that led to these recommendations. She stressed the urgent need for legislative support to enact laws that safeguard workers’ rights and promote national productivity and growth.

“The submissions made by the committee reflect a balanced and practical approach to addressing the myriad challenges faced by our workforce. These recommendations are not mere suggestions; they outline actionable reforms crucial for sustainable improvements in labour conditions,” Onyejeocha stated.

She also highlighted initiatives like the Labour and Employment Empowerment Program (LEEP), designed to comprehensively reform labour practices and enhance compliance with established standards.

In conclusion, Onyejeocha emphasized the critical role of legislative interventions in shaping a fair and equitable labour market that supports the aspirations of Nigerian workers.
