Abayomi Hunye, Special Adviser to the Government and Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), issued this ultimatum during a recent meeting with leaders and members of the Ogun State Association of Market Men and Women in Abeokuta.
Hunye emphasized that to tackle the cholera crisis, markets must enforce rigorous waste management practices and maintain cleanliness. He noted that improper waste disposal not only attracts flies, rodents, and disease vectors but also contaminates goods sold to the public, posing serious health risks.
He explained that waste often clogs drainage channels, leading to unnecessary erosion and air pollution. Hunye urged traders to utilize the waste collection services provided by the government’s PSP operators.
“The Ogun State government has placed large waste collection bins in many markets, some of which are serviced by Waste PSP Operators. Traders in these markets have no excuse for failing to dispose of their waste properly,” Hunye said.
He criticized traders and market leaders who neglect proper waste disposal, highlighting how dumping waste in drainage channels and creating illegal dump sites can lead to erosion, offensive odors, and infestations. He pointed to past incidents, such as the fire outbreak at Lafenwa Market in Abeokuta, as examples of the potential dangers associated with poor waste management.
“The state government will not tolerate these issues in any of its markets. Markets found violating these cleanliness directives will face closure,” Hunye warned.
He called on market men and women to promote proper waste disposal practices and collaborate with the Ogun State Waste Management Authority to ensure a cleaner, healthier environment.

He contrasted the Nigerian situation with the United States, pointing out that while ₦3,000 can cover daily requirements locally, attempting to live on an equivalent nominal value in the U.S. would constitute extreme poverty, underscoring his stance that contextual evaluation is vital.
Furthermore, the ambassador-designate critiqued the rigid application of the World Bank’s global poverty threshold—specifically the standard benchmark of living on less than $2 a day—arguing that international metrics fail to accurately reflect ground-level economic conditions in Nigeria unless adjusted for local purchasing power and actual domestic expenditures.
