Desperate Pleas From Niger State: Thousands Of IDPs Suffer Amid Rampant Insecurity

The humanitarian crisis in Niger State has deteriorated, leaving thousands of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in dire straits.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

DAILY POST reports that IDPs in various camps across the local governments of Shiroro, Munya, and Rafi are enduring appalling conditions. Forced to flee their homes due to violent attacks from bandits and Boko Haram extremists, most of these displaced individuals are women and children.

The camps suffer from poor housing, gross rights violations, and inadequate sanitation. Basic necessities such as food, water, and healthcare are scarce. Malnutrition is rampant, with many children suffering from stunting and poor hygiene. The spread of diseases like cholera and diarrhea is exacerbated by the lack of clean water and proper sanitation facilities.

During visits to camps in the Rafi Local Government Area, as well as Gwada and Kuta in Shiroro Local Government Area, displaced farmers decried neglect and mistreatment by the state government, emphasizing their lack of livelihood to support their families.

“We don’t know when the government is going to put an end to these security challenges that have dislodged us from our homes and farmlands,” some victims told our correspondent. They requested relocation to safer areas to restart their lives, citing the takeover of their communities by bandits and Boko Haram.

The IDPs described their living conditions as overcrowded, lacking privacy, with insufficient food and no beddings, leading to discomfort and health issues.

Yusuf Bala Kuta, the IDP Desk Officer and Coordinator for Shiroro LG, highlighted the severe food shortages as a major issue. He reported that 50 malnourished children were receiving medical treatment due to inadequate food for breastfeeding mothers, and many children were without access to education.

Kuta noted that the Kuta camp houses over 5,000 IDPs, with nearly 4,000 sleeping within the camp. He lamented the cramped conditions, with about 80 persons per room, and the lack of livelihood opportunities for the displaced.

The IDPs face ongoing threats from bandits and Boko Haram, with some communities completely destroyed. Kuta called for urgent state government and other authority assistance, acknowledging recent support from the Nigerian Red Cross.

An IDP from Bassa community, Ahmed Al-Mustapha, lamented continued attacks by Boko Haram since the military vacated their areas. A widow, Hasiya Shuaibu, shared her ordeal of losing her husband in an attack due to the absence of military presence, emphasizing the need for government intervention to end the insecurity.

Halima Musa, a mother of a malnourished child, appealed for government help, citing insufficient food and its impact on their children’s health and education.

Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Alh Baba Suleiman Yumu, stated that over 42,000 IDPs were housed across the three worst-affected LGs of Shiroro, Munya, and Rafi, with about 75 communities affected. He assured that the state government is striving to provide aid within available resources and will continue to do more.

Hussani Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), speaking on behalf of the Director General, emphasized the administration’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of those in need during emergencies. He noted recent distributions of relief food items to IDPs and ongoing efforts to meet their needs.

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.

Published

on

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
