A devastating cooking gas explosion in Jamata, a community within Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, has resulted in the destruction of over 100 houses.
According to reports from DAILY POST, the explosion occurred on Wednesday, causing extensive damage to buildings and properties estimated to be worth millions of naira.
During a visit to the affected community, Kogi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Bashir Abubakar Gegu, expressed deep concern over the losses incurred. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety regulations when handling cooking gas.
“I urge everyone to strictly follow gas usage guidelines. This incident could have been prevented if safety protocols had been observed,” he stated.
Gegu reassured the victims of immediate and ongoing support from the state government to aid their recovery and restore their livelihoods.

As an example, Omokri cited the long-standing cultural practice of showing appreciation to public officials who perform their duties effectively. He contended that while entities like Transparency International classify such gestures as bribery, these actions are not inherently corrupt within the Nigerian cultural framework.
Omokri further emphasized that Nigeria must take control of its own narrative, arguing that relying on external organizations to define the country perpetuates negative stereotypes of poverty and backwardness. In addition to his remarks on governance, he highlighted Lagos State’s significant economic progress under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting an increase in GDP from under $100 billion to approximately $259 billion in purchasing power parity terms over the last six years, alongside rising income levels.
Addressing security concerns, Omokri dismissed claims that Nigeria is unsafe, pointing to the annual Detty December events in Lagos. He stated that the festivities draw 1.2 million tourists—making it Africa’s largest tourism event—without a single fatality or injury recorded.
