Atiku Sounds Alarm: Protecting Traditional Institutions From Government Overreach....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Writing by Sediq Mutari

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over what he perceives as an increasing trend of state governments exerting undue influence by manipulating the processes of appointing traditional leaders.

Atiku, who contested as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last general election, emphasized the need to safeguard traditional institutions from the arbitrary actions of state authorities.

In a statement released on Tuesday through his official channels, the former Vice President highlighted the potential consequences for community peace and order if the procedures for selecting traditional rulers were disrupted.

He called for constitutional reforms that not only acknowledge the significance of traditional institutions in national laws but also clearly delineate their responsibilities.

Atiku stated, “Recent developments across the country have shown a disturbing trend where state governments interfere in the traditional process of appointing rulers. This is a reality we cannot ignore.”

“While it is recognized that the appointment of traditional rulers falls under the jurisdiction of state governments, albeit through local government authorities, it must be acknowledged that traditional institutions are integral to our governance framework.”

“We must shield traditional institutions from arbitrary state actions that undermine their stability. Instability in the process of appointing traditional leaders invariably disrupts community harmony and security.”

“Despite our current constitution not formally recognizing traditional institutions, their pivotal roles in economic activities and community security are evident from our experiences.”

“It is crucial to remember that traditional institutions predate colonialism and have historically governed effectively. Therefore, these institutions must be safeguarded and nurtured, not undermined.”

“On this basis, I advocate for constitutional reforms that not only recognize traditional institutions within our legal framework but also define their roles clearly.”

“Given the imperative to combat terrorism and other security challenges at the grassroots level, such reforms are now more critical than ever.”

“In conclusion, I appeal to state governors to accord due respect to traditional institutions. The customs upheld by our traditional rulers embody our collective heritage as a people.”

Key Arguments

  • Government Responsibility: Ibe asserts that under Nigerian law, the government must treat any sudden, suspicious, or unnatural death as a crime against the state.

  • Investigative Obligation: He argues that the government’s duty to investigate such deaths cannot be blocked or halted by the deceased’s family.

  • Failure to Act: Ibe claims the government failed in its responsibilities regarding the death, which occurred at the Uburu residence of Works Minister David Umahi.

  • Forensic Concerns: He questioned the absence of a state-conducted autopsy, stating that without one, it is impossible to determine the cause of death or identify potential foul play, negligence, or torture.

  • Required Procedures: Ibe maintains that in such cases, the police are required to secure the scene, gather forensic evidence, and question all involved parties.
