Police Arrest Couple For Human Trafficking In Anambra

Writing by Sediq Mutari....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A couple has been arrested in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, for their alleged involvement in human trafficking. The suspects were apprehended while finalizing a ₦1 million deal.

The Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare handed over the couple and an accomplice to the police for investigation and prosecution. The arrest was initiated by community chairman Arinzechukwu Azodo, who reported the suspected trafficking incident to the Women Affairs Commissioner, Ify Obinabo. Commissioner Obinabo directed the immediate arrest of the suspects.

One suspect, Ebere, admitted she was approached by Temple Nwankwo to sell her twin baby. Ebere agreed to collaborate and connect Temple with a potential buyer. However, Temple denied any involvement in the transaction.

Ebere’s confession revealed that Temple requested an upfront payment of ₦1 million from the buyer, who refused to pay without seeing the baby. This disagreement led to Temple leaving the deal.

Temple, originally from Enugu State but residing in Ifitedunu, denied any business dealings with Ebere. She claimed Ebere sought her help to obtain a male child, as Ebere had been unable to have a child of her own. Temple stated she warned Ebere to stay away from such activities and claimed Ebere continued visiting her house despite warnings.

Community members had previously accused Temple of human trafficking, suspecting her and her husband of involvement in the illegal trade. When questioned about her two children, Temple claimed they were dead, but her story aroused further suspicions.

The investigation is ongoing .
