Rivers Crisis: Appeal Court Reserves Judgment In Amaewhule’s Suit

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has reserved judgment in the appeal filed by former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and 24 others against current Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo and five others.
The court decided to adjourn after hearing arguments from all parties involved.
During a virtual session on Thursday, Amaewhule and the other appellants requested the court to halt the enforcement of a high court ruling that removed them from office, suspend any further actions in the case, and invalidate any decisions made by Jumbo while in office.
They also urged for a swift resolution of the matter, contending that the trial court had overstepped its authority.
After considering the submissions from the lawyers, the three-man panel, led by Justice Jimi Olukayode-Bada, reserved the date for judgment, which will be communicated to the parties involved.
Additionally, the appeal court directed that no other court, including the State High Court, should handle the case until a final decision is reached.
DAILY POST recalls that a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt had barred Martin Amaewhule from acting as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly following a motion by the new Speaker, Victor Jumbo, and two others, declaring Amaewhule’s seat vacant.
Justice Charles Wali, ruling on the motion ex parte, also prohibited the other 24 Assembly members from entering the premises or performing legislative duties on behalf of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Following the verdict, Amaewhule and the others appealed to the appellate court.
