A 23-year-old woman has admitted to orchestrating the abduction of a newborn from a hospital bed in Adamawa State.
Maryam Sani, the woman in question, revealed that she took the baby from a clinic in Ngurore, a community within the Yola South Local Government Area.
In her confession to journalists, Maryam disclosed that she had suffered a miscarriage three months into her pregnancy but kept it secret from her husband. When her purported due date arrived, she felt compelled to produce a baby.
Maryam recounted how, while at the clinic for a routine check-up due to feeling unwell, she found herself alone in a ward where an unattended baby lay in a cot. Seeing an opportunity, she seized the infant.
She insisted that her motive was not malicious but stemmed from a desire for motherhood, stating, “I took her because I loved her and needed her for myself.”
Upon bringing the baby home, Maryam passed off the child as her own, successfully deceiving her community into believing she had given birth.
However, her ruse was exposed when the biological parents reported the abduction to the police, prompting an investigation that led to Maryam’s arrest.
SP Suleiman Nguroje, the Police Public Relations Officer in Adamawa State, affirmed that Maryam would face legal repercussions for her actions, emphasizing the commitment of the police force to uphold justice.
