Court Refuses Bail For Abba Kyari In Drug Trafficking Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja has declined to grant bail to suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.
Justice Emeka Nwite, in his ruling, stated that the decision to grant Kyari bail lies within the court’s discretion, as outlined in section 161 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
The judge emphasized that Kyari failed to provide any evidence justifying the need for bail.
Previously, on May 22, the judge had temporarily granted bail to the former head of the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, for two weeks to attend his mother’s burial. This period was extended by a week following an application by Kyari.
Kyari met the bail conditions on June 1 and was released the same day.
During the recent court proceedings, Justice Emeka Nwite declined to extend the earlier bail order but assured an expedited hearing in the case.
Kyari was apprehended on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for alleged involvement with an international drug cartel. He, alongside four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team, namely Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu, was arraigned on March 7, 2022.
Additionally, two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, were charged after their arrest at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
While Kyari and the IRT members pleaded not guilty, Umeibe and Ezenwanne pleaded guilty and were subsequently convicted.
