FG Rejects ₦250,000 Minimum Wage Demand As Unsustainable

Writing by Sediq Mutari....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Presidency has declared the ₦250,000 minimum wage demand by Organized Labour as unsustainable, asserting that such a demand cannot be met by the Federal Government.

In an interview with Punch, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that allocating all resources to meet this demand is impractical. He criticized the Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress for their “selfish” demand, stating that the resources should benefit the entire population, not just the less than 10 percent who are union members.

Onanuga further noted that the Federal Government may not engage with Labour leaders again unless significant new developments arise.

He said, “We keep urging labour to be realistic. The government cannot allocate all its resources to pay workers. Many citizens are self-employed or in the private sector and are not affected by this demand. Labour, representing a minority, continues to reject the proposed ₦62,000 minimum wage. They are employees, not employers.”

Onanuga mentioned that Labour needs to critically reconsider their stance instead of constantly threatening to shut down the system. He highlighted that the proposed figure was determined in consultation with the private sector and other stakeholders.

President Tinubu had announced on Democracy Day that an executive bill on the new national minimum wage would be sent to the National Assembly. When asked about the timing of this bill, Onanuga indicated it might be after the Sallah break, although no specific date was provided.

“I am not sure when the bill will be sent, perhaps after Sallah. The current figure was agreed upon by a committee including the private sector, NECA, and NACIMMA. The FG cannot unilaterally decide on a different amount without consulting these stakeholders. The government must ensure that state and local governments can also afford to pay the agreed wage,” Onanuga added.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
