Former Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has announced his endorsement of Monday Okpebholo, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. Shaibu hailed Okpebholo and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) as the only two local candidates among the sixteen contenders, asserting their potential to drive Edo’s progress.

Speaking at St. Paul Catholic Church during a Fathers’ Day event, Shaibu criticized the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, labeling him as a product of godfatherism, contrary to the anti-godfatherism stance of former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Shaibu emphasized his preference for a local candidate, highlighting the importance of governance understanding local dynamics. He underscored the failures of an “outsider” approach and expressed his alignment with the APC’s Okpebholo as the local choice.

Regarding accusations of anti-party activity, Shaibu defended his support for Okpebholo while remaining a PDP member, citing the precedent set by Governor Obaseki’s past political affiliations.

Shaibu praised Okpebholo’s grassroots experience, asserting that practical governance, not rhetoric, is the need of the hour. He questioned Ighodalo’s eligibility, contrasting his own involvement in grassroots politics with Ighodalo’s purported detachment.

In conclusion, Shaibu advocated for governance rooted in local realities, endorsing Okpebholo as the candidate capable of addressing the genuine concerns of Edo residents.
