NLC Urges Tinubu’s Government To Meet Minimum Wage DemandsThe Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address its demands regarding the minimum wage, emphasizing the need for adjustments based on the country’s current economic realities.

Naija News reports that the NLC also criticized a recent statement made by President Tinubu during a meeting with governors and National Assembly members on the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s Democracy Day. The President remarked, “Senate president, deputy senate president, you will get a notice from me if I have changed my mind on minimum wage. We are going to do it—what Nigeria can afford, what you can afford, what I can afford. They ask you to cut your coat according to your size if you have size at all.”

In an interview with Punch, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah described the president’s statement as contradictory to his earlier promise to ensure a living wage, which is more substantial than a minimum wage. “This will be in breach of his promise to pay a living wage which is superior to a minimum wage. Moreover, there is unanimity of opinion that government accede to the demand of Labour based on practical realities,” Upah stated.

During a nationwide broadcast on June 12, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s democracy, President Tinubu announced that a consensus on the new minimum wage had been reached between the Federal Government and Organised Labour. He revealed that an executive bill would soon be sent to the National Assembly to formalize the new minimum wage agreement.

Tinubu said, “In this spirit, we have negotiated in good faith and with open arms with Organised Labour on a new national minimum wage. We shall soon send an executive bill to the National Assembly to enshrine what has been agreed upon as part of our law for the next five years or less.”

However, the Organised Labour quickly refuted this claim. Acting President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Adewale Adeyanju, stated that no agreement had been reached by the Federal Government Tripartite Committee on the new minimum wage.

Adeyanju emphasized that the demand remains at ₦250,000 and that anything less would be unacceptable. “Our demand remains ₦250,000 only, and we have not been given any compelling reasons to change this position which we consider a great concession by Nigerian workers during the tripartite negotiation process,” he said.

He further added, “We are, therefore, surprised at the submission of Mr President over a supposed agreement. We believe that he may have been misled into believing that there was an agreement with the NLC and TUC. There was none and we must let the President, Nigerians, and other national stakeholders understand this immediately to avoid a mix-up in the ongoing conversation around the national minimum wage.”

Court Ruling Details

  • Consequently, the apex court fully restored the original 2024 final forfeiture order granted by Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Lagos.

Forfeited Assets

The assets permanently forfeited to the Federal Government include:

  • Properties in Lagos: Two detached duplexes in Lekki Phase 1, an undeveloped parcel of land on Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, a bungalow and a four-bedroom duplex in Ikoyi, eight apartment units on Adekunle Lawal Road, and a duplex on Bank Road.

  • Properties in Delta State: An industrial complex currently under construction, situated on 22 plots of land in Agbor.

  • Funds and Financial Assets: The forfeiture includes $2.045 million in cash and share certificates associated with Queensdorf Global Fund Limited.
