Ijaw Youths Urge Tinubu To Uphold Amnesty Programme

Writing by Sediq Mutari....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Ijaw Youths Network (IYN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to disregard calls for the termination of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP).

In a statement signed by its President, Frank Ebikabo, and Secretary, Federal Ebiaridor, the IYN emphasized that those advocating for the scrapping of the PAP are undermining the peace and stability in the Niger Delta. The group contends that such calls are not motivated by patriotism or genuine concern for the region and the country.

The statement responded to comments made by Frank Tietie, who alleged corruption within the PAP on national television, claiming that the agency had not produced significant results despite substantial financial investment by the Federal Government.

The IYN rejected Tietie’s assertions, particularly his claim that the PAP benefits only one ethnic group. They stressed that the Niger Delta needs unity and concerted efforts for development, not divisive ethnic sentiments against an effective agency making a positive impact in the region.

The group highlighted the PAP’s contributions to maintaining peace in the oil-rich Niger Delta through its various programs. They noted that many former agitators and community members have excelled in various sectors of the economy after receiving training through the PAP.

The IYN pointed out that PAP beneficiaries are employed in diverse fields such as air traffic control, flight instruction, aircraft maintenance, piloting, and underwater welding. Many others have thrived in trades like fashion design, salon management, fish farming, baking, rice production, hairdressing, and building materials trading.

The group condemned the use of ethnic biases to undermine the PAP and called for unity and development efforts.

“We listened to the desperate call by one Mr. Frank Tietie, a supposed Niger Delta activist, who called for the scrapping of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, citing corruption. He also misleadingly claimed that only a specific ethnic group benefits from the programme and criticized the Federal Government’s spending of N500 billion on the PAP without acknowledging the funds allocated to other regional development bodies like the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Niger Delta Development Commission,” the statement read.

The IYN emphasized that the Federal Government’s amnesty was not selective or ethnic-based, noting that the 30,000 ex-agitators enrolled in the programme were not chosen based on ethnicity.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the importance of the PAP in fostering peace and development in the Niger Delta and urging President Tinubu to maintain the programme for the region’s continued stability and progress.
