Efforts to mend the political rift between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, are intensifying as the Ijaw ethnic group steps in. The Ijaw Young Professionals Association (IYPA) held a press conference in Port Harcourt on Sunday, aiming to facilitate reconciliation between these two key political figures.

This initiative highlights the Ijaw community’s commitment to stabilizing the political environment in Rivers State, which has been strained by tensions between Fubara and Wike. “Chief Wike has consistently supported the Ijaw cause, as demonstrated by his selection of an Ijaw deputy governor and other significant appointments of Ijaw individuals to reputable positions,” Achepeka stated.

The Ijaw leaders reaffirmed their support for Wike, clarifying that any perceived animosity between him and the Ijaw community is based on misunderstandings. They noted his ongoing collaboration with Ijaw leaders and his actions that have significantly benefited their community.

The Ijaw community’s intervention is seen as a crucial step towards fostering unity and mutual respect among Rivers State’s political leaders, which is essential for the state’s progress and stability. Achepeka stated, “We want to categorically state that the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike, is not an enemy of the Ijaws as he has been portrayed to be.”

He highlighted that even as the Minister of FCT Abuja, Wike has made significant appointments of Ijaw individuals, such as Chief Boma Iyayi, Chief Dax George Kelly, and Ambassador Maureen Tamuno, without seeking their support for personal or political gain. “Wike is and always has been a democratic and humane leader to the core,” he added.

The IYPA has established a committee to pursue reconciliation between Wike and Fubara in the interest of the state’s peace and development. This committee will seek an audience with both leaders to resolve their differences.

“We have nominated individuals to see if they can meet these two leaders to solve this problem once and for all. We have asked them to write to arrange a meeting,” Achepeka said. “We are all aware that this is a family matter. We urge leaders of the Ijaw Nation and the PDP to join in this move to settle these differences.”
